3PL Lessons: Plan Ahead for a Year Like 2011

Mother Earth has not been fooling around the past couple years, and 2011 was no exception. Tornadoes. Drought-fueled wildfires. Hurricanes (in... New England?). Not to mention the natural disasters of mind-numbing scale that happened abroad like the Japanese tsunami and nuclear meltdown.

In addition to unimaginable levels of human suffering, these disasters also destroyed industry centers and business infrastructure networks that would otherwise play key roles in helping communities climb back onto their feet, and they disrupted supply chains that stretch across the globe.

This threat to businesses (and the communities that rely on them) isn’t limited to those whose supply chains stretch to distant tropical lands perched precariously on the Ring of Fire. In fact, 2011 showed just how much natural disasters can effect businesses located entirely in the United States as well. Supply chain flexibility is a necessity for any business, regardless of which flag is flying out front. But companies with wide, international supply chains are particularly vulnerable.

Multinational supply chains are a growing part of the American economy. For the most part, this is a great thing — it helps companies lower costs and boost quality that they can then pass on to their consumers, and it helps lift communities out of grinding, cyclical poverty in historically impoverished communities. But the longer and wider your supply chain gets, the more difficult it is to maintain control over every link and the more likely it is to be disrupted by some unforeseen natural (or man-made, for that matter) disaster — without help.

If you’re unsure whether or not your apparel supply chain has the kind of nimbleness and resilience necessary to respond to disasters, give us a call to learn how our 3pl logistics services can help. Here at The Apparel Logistics Group, our goal is to give apparel companies confidence to boldly develop the apparel supply chain and logistics networks needed to thrive.
