Mother Earth has not been fooling around the past couple years, and 2011 was no exception. Tornadoes. Drought-fueled wildfires. Hurricanes (in... New England?). Not to mention the natural disasters of mind-numbing scale that happened abroad like the Japanese tsunami and nuclear meltdown.

As we mentioned last week, the bulk of America’s annual shopping itch gets scratched during those mad weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. And getting the right product in front of the right, harried shopper who simply knows your hip leather jacket or leggings or lederhosen (I’m sure there’s a market for those somewhere) is exactly the right thing for that special someone requires top-notch apparel supply chain management and reindeer-like speed-to-market.

But the only thing worse than missing this window of ravishing retail bliss is to make it to markets on time, have your products packaged neatly beneath trees across America... and then find them stuck in return lines at the stores from whence they came.

Here’s an all-encompassing example of how far folks are willing to go to get top-quality products like your company’s apparel this time of year:

A southern California woman turned herself in to authorities as the person who pepper sprayed video-game shoppers in a Walmart during Black Friday's shopping frenzy, Los Angeles police said Saturday.

At the Walmart in Porter Ranch, the pepper-spraying incident occurred when a woman doused fellow shoppers with the spray as people were grabbing for Xbox video game consoles, police said. The suspect was able to pay for her purchases and leave the store before police arrived, authorities said.

Black Friday shopping was marked by violence in at least seven states, including California.
